Above: an illustration from CHALK, by Bill Thomson.

CHALK, a children's book by Bill Thomson, associate professor of illustration in the Hartford Art School and HAS MFA in illustration faculty, was recently announced as a finalist for a 2011 Connecticut Book Award.

CHALK joins guest presenter Wendell Minor's The Last Train and Andrea Wisnewski's The Ink Garden of Brother Theophane as the three finalists for the 2011 award in the Children's Illustrator category.

Thomson previously won the award in 2009 for Baseball Hour and was a finalist in 2005 (Karate Hour) and 2007 (Building With Dad).

The Connecticut Book Awards, sponsored by the Connecticut Center For The Book, recognize and honor books with specific ties to our state. The author, illustrator, or designer must be native-born or have been a legal resident of Connecticut for at least three years, or the book must have a Connecticut setting in order to be considered.

Winners will be announced at the Hartford Public Library on Sunday, October 30.
